A couple of times a year the Michigan Association of Chiropractors includes recent studies showing the efficacy of chiropractic care. This is an important part of our profession because up until about 10 years ago there were no studies being performed on chiropractic care to show the validity. I think this may be part of the confusion for people that feel they “don’t believe in chiropractic care.” Let’s catch up with all the cool new findings in chiropractic care this week.
1. When spinal manipulations occur within the first 10 days of a spinal episode (i.e. pain) results include reduced overall episode costs and lower recency of imaging, injections, prescription medications, and surgery. This study shows the options for back pain should be “Chiropractic first, medicine second and surgery last.” (Date from Optum 2015)
2. Complex medical care was the most expensive care route, followed by physical therapy. Chiropractic was the least expensive care path. In fact, three years of chiropractic care proved less expensive than the first year of physical therapy. (Improvements in the patient’s journey 2014)
3. 42.7% of worker’s injured on the job who first saw a surgeon had surgery, in contrast to only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor instead. (Chiropractic study and Back Pain)
4. Chiropractic manipulation in conjunction with standard medical care offers a significant advantage for decreasing pain and improving physical functioning when compared with only standard medical care for low back pain. (Chiropractic with Medical Care Advantages)
